Why is my fiberglass pool turning white

Why is my fiberglass pool’s shell whitening? This is a frequent question that fiberglass pool customers may have to understand at some point.

This dulling can start as a white material forming on the walls of the swimming pool and can also make the water appear hazy. The white particulate can also build up in the filter which will require constant cleaning. This can happen to any fiberglass pool because of age, over doing chemical treatments (especially overchlorination) or most frequently, a combination of these issues.

If you view a layer of white or greyish-white material on the sides of your pool around the waterline, that's calcium. Calcium can build up and leach into the shell’s gelcoat. As fiberglass swimming pools begin to age the gelcoat finish will slowly fade to white over time. Calcium scale deposits happen when your water an over abundance of calcium or from hard water. The white flakes are usually are there from calcium deposits that have built up over time.
